DeLand, Fla. - Braedyn Pruitt singled in Shane Jordan for the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and the Hatters held on for a 5-4 victory over Notre Dame Friday night at Melching Field. The Irish scored four runs in the first inning but Stetson held them to one hit over the final eight innings for the comeback victory.Â
With the Hatters (10-3) trailing 4-3, Kevin Johnson led off the seventh with a single. Jordan followed with a base hit and Casey Frawley's single to left brought in Johnson to tie the score. Pruitt then rapped a base hit between first and second to plate Jordan for the eventual winning run.Â
Notre Dame (2-5) put all four of their runs on the board in the top of the first on a pair of doubles, two singles, two walks and a hit batter. Starter Cory Kluber quickly settled down, however, and allowed only two more base runners over the next five innings.Â
Â
Nick Pugliese (2-1) pitched a perfect seventh that included two strikeouts and picked up the win. Stopper of the Year candidate Robbie Elsemiller threw the final two innings to pick up his fourth save of the season. Stetson pitching combined to allow just one hit after the first inning.Â
Â
Jordan extended his hitting streak to 11 games and reached base three times Friday night. He scored twice and needs just one more run to tie for fourth place on the Hatters all-time list.Â
Â
After falling behind 4-0 in the top of the first, Stetson whittled away at the deficit. Jordan led off the bottom of the first with a walk and later scored on a passed ball.Â
Â
In the second, Jordan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in Adam Tindle, making it a 4-2 game. Tindle's sacrifice fly in the third scored Brian Pruitt and pulled the Hatters within 4-3.
Â
Brett Graffey (0-2) took the loss for the Irish. The right-hander went three innings, allowing the tying and winning runs. Starter Joey Williamson was chased after only 1 1/3 innings. He left after allowing two runs on only one hit but three walks and two hit batters. Dan Kapala tossed the middle 3 2/3 and registered three strikeouts.
Â
The Hatters improved to 10-3 this year with all thirteen games against non-conference foes. Stetson is 32-13 against non-conference opponents over the last two years.Â
