Hatters Wrestle Gators, 4-3

DeLand, Fla. - Four runs in the first two innings were just enough for Stetson to edge Florida 4-3 Tuesday night in front of a record crowd of 2,975 at Melching Field.  Freshman starter Robbie Donovan notched his first career win with 6 1/3 stellar innings against the Gators (11-13) and Robbie Elsemiller pitched the final two innings for his ninth save of the year.

Donovan (1-1) received help early when Shane Jordan and Josh Clendenin smacked back-to-back doubles to score the game's first run.  Justin Bass's sacrifice fly made it 2-0 and Brian Pruitt's double to left put the Hatters ahead 3-0.

Brian Leclerc led off the Gators half of the second with a triple and scored on a ground out to pull Florida within 3-1.

Stetson got the run back in the bottom of the second when Ryan Puskar singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a fielder's choice.  He then came home on a wild pitch for a 4-1 advantage.

Donovan worked into the seventh, the longest outing of his brief career, and allowed just six hits and two runs.  He walked just two and struck out three to notch his first collegiate win.  The freshman pitched around a first-and-third jam in the first inning and had little trouble the rest of the night.

Florida made it interesting with two runs in the seventh.  Chris Petrie doubled with one out to end Donovan's evening.  Jonathan Pigott was hit by a pitch then Jon Townsend singled in Petrie.  Pigott came home on a ground out to make it a one-run game.

Elsemiller entered in the eighth.  After giving up back-to-back singles, Cody Neer hit a flare toward left-center.  Shane Jordan made a sprinting catch in the gap to rob him of the game-tying hit then Stetson appealed at second after Austin Pride left early for third base to get the last out of the inning.  A 1-2-3 ninth gave Elsemiller his ninth save in nine chances.

The top three hitters in Stetson's lineup went a combined 6-for-13.  Five different Hatters registered multi-hit nights.

Stetson remains at home for a 7:00 p.m. Friday night A-Sun tilt with Mercer at Melching Field.
