Stetson Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Mercer

DeLand, Fla. - After running away with a 9-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, Stetson dropped the back half 4-3 to Mercer Saturday afternoon at Melching Field.  Chris Ingoglia pitched his second consecutive complete-game victory for Stetson (20-8, 4-2) in the opener.

Ingoglia (4-2), the reigning A-Sun Pitcher of the Week, turned in nine innings of one-run ball.  The senior left-hander allowed just six hits and two walks.  He allowed only three base runners after the fourth inning.

He received plenty of run support, as well.  Braedyn Pruitt led the way with a 3-for-3 afternoon that included a two-run homer, his team-leading fifth of the year.  The third baseman drove in three runs and scored three times, while reaching base all five times he came to the plate.

The Hatters scored four runs in the first and led 6-1 after two innings.  A pair of late-inning runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth sealed the Stetson victory.

Shane Jordan went 4-for-6 from the leadoff spot and Jeremy Cruz added three RBI on two hits.

Stetson put themselves in a position to sweep a three-game series for the first time this year after taking a 3-1 lead into the seventh.  But three runs off three pitchers, including Robbie Elsemiller (1-1) who blew his first save in 11 tries, gave Mercer its first lead of the series, 4-3.  Tyler Brown drove in two runs to tie it and Mike Armstrong's single put the Bears on top.

In the bottom of the eighth, Stetson threatened with two men on and one out, but Mercer closer Cory Gearrin pitched out of the jam to help him eventually earn his eighth save.

Cruz drove in two of Stetson's runs for a five-RBI afternoon.  Justin Bass also drove in runs in both ends of the doubleheader to give him 15 RBI in his last nine games.

The Hatters return to action Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch against former A-Sun rival UCF.
