Bulls Nip Hatters

Tampa, Fla. - An error with two outs in the eighth gave USF a 6-5 win over Stetson Tuesday night at Red McEwen Field.  The Bulls (11-4) snapped a 6-game losing streak to the Hatters (10-5) and also snapped Stetson's 13-game Tuesday night win streak.

USF's Joey Angelberger drew a one-out walk in the bottom of eighth from reliever Blake Marsocci (0-1) and advanced to second on a subsequent ground out.  Pinch-hitter Josh LeRoy then bounced a ball to short.  When the throw came in low, Angelberger came in to score what turned out to be the winning run.

Davis Bilardello (1-0) notched the win after getting the last two outs of the eighth and retiring his only batter of the ninth.  Shawn Sanford nailed down the win for his first save of the year.

The first five Bulls of the day reached base ? four without taking a swing.  Three walks and hit batter put USF ahead 1-0 with the bases loaded and no outs.  After a Dexter Butler RBI single, Hatters starter Justin Dechert coaxed a double play ball that brought in another run.

Stetson pulled within 3-1 in the second inning when Josh Clendenin scored from second after a two-out throwing error.

In the fourth, the Hatters avoided two double plays before shaving another run off the deficit.  Josh Clendenin led off the inning with a walk.  He was forced out on the next play but the ball was thrown wildly to first.  Another grounder resulted in another force out but this time it was Justin Bass beating the throw to first to keep the inning alive.  Back-to-back singles from Adam Tindle and Jeremy Cruz scored Bass to make it a 3-2 game.

Dechert quickly settled following the rough first inning.  He set down nine straight Bulls after the first five had reached.  USF did not threaten again until the fourth, but Shane Jordan made a running catch in right-center to rob Mike Consolmagno of a potential extra-base hit that would have scored at least one run.

In the bottom of the sixth Casey Frawley drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to tie the game.  That prompted a USF pitching change with left-hander James Rowe entering to face left-handed batting Braedyn Pruitt.  The Hatters third baseman bounced a ball up the middle for an infield single that scored two runs and put Stetson ahead for the first time, 5-3.  All three Stetson runs in the sixth scored with two outs.

The Bulls answered to tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.  Braulio Pardo and pinch-hitter Charles Cleveland each delivered run-scoring singles to knot the score at five.

It was the Hatters first loss in 2007 when scoring at least five runs and also Stetson's first true road game of the year.  The Hatters have dropped back-to-back games for the first time this year.

Clendenin and Cruz each tallied two hits for the Hatters.  Nick Pugliese turned in 1 1/3 scoreless relief innings and David Burns struck out the only batter he faced.

Stetson returns home Wednesday night for a 7:00 PM game against Michigan State at Melching Field.
