(DeLand, Fla.) ? The Stetson women's tennis team concluded the regular season with a 5-2 victory over Marquette Saturday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Hatters evened up their season record at 11-11 and will next participate in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament later in April.
“After a disappointing loss yesterday, the team really rebounded today to finish our regular season play on a very positive note,” head coach Sasha Schmid said. “I am really proud of the team.”
Stetson began by taking the doubles point with wins at No.1 and No. 3. Breanna Atkinson and Katherine St. Clair improved to a team-best 11-5 overall record with an 8-3 decision in the No. 3 competition. Anna Leonenko and Katherine Nowicki posted an 8-6 win in the No. 1 match to clinch the doubles point.
“The team played very well today ? especially in doubles,” Schmid said.
The Hats then took the first four singles matches, including straight sets victories from Valentina Galbarini at No.1, Atkinson at No. 2, and Nowicki at No. 4. Leonenko bounced back after dropping the first set to claim a 0-6, 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3. Galbarini improved her singles record to 14-7.
“We are looking forward to a few more days of good practice and then the A-Sun Tournament,” Schmid said.
On a scheduling note, the April 14 match with Bethune-Cookman has been cancelled. Therefore Stetson's next competition comes in the A-Sun Tournament April 20-22.
