JU Handcuffs Hatters

DeLand, Fla. - Matt Davis went eight innings and the #4 seed Jacksonville Dolphins handed the top-seeded Hatters a 4-1 defeat in the second round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Baseball Championship.  Davis and JU (31-26) held Stetson (40-18) to six singles to help wipe out a 12-strikeout effort from Chris Ingoglia.

Stetson next plays at 11:00 a.m. Friday morning against #2 seed Mercer.  If the Hatters win, they would then play the nightcap at 7:00 p.m. against #3 Belmont for the right to advance to the championship game on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, #5-seeded Gardner-Webb eliminated #6 Lipscomb and will play in the 3:00 p.m. game on Friday against JU.  In the evening game, #3 Belmont outlasted #2 Mercer 4-3 in 10 innings.

Jacksonville put up the game's first run in the first inning on Ryan McArdle's single that scored Mike McAllister.  A-Sun Player of the Year Pete Clifford made it 2-0 when he launched a third-inning homer, his 12th of the year.

The Hatters loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth but were unable to score against JU starter Matt Davis (4-1).  Davis went eight innings, allowing one run on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

The Dolphins then took the opportunity to expand their lead in the bottom half of the inning.  Chuck Opachich drew a leadoff walk, stole second and went to third on an error.  McAllister followed with a single through the left side to score Opachich and give Jacksonville a 3-0 lead.

Stetson again loaded the bases in the sixth and broke through against Davis on Adam Tindle's sacrifice fly to score Casey Frawley.  The rally was thwarted after the play when Justin Bass was called out on an appeal to end the inning.

Bass and Frawley led the Hatters with two hits apiece.

Chris Ingoglia (9-5) took the loss despite striking out 12 Dolphins in 7 2/3 innings.  The senior allowed eight hits and four runs (three earned), while suffering only his fifth loss in 34 career starts at Melching Field.  The 12 K's for Ingoglia give him a career total of 281, good for fifth all-time in Stetson history.
