DeLand, Fla. - Adam Tindle's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th scored Shane Jordan as Stetson (41-18) eliminated Mecer (33-25) with a 2-1 thriller Friday afternoon at Melching Field. With the win, the Hatters move on to face #3 seed Belmont tonight at 7:00 p.m.Â
Shane Jordan ignited the 11th-inning rally with a leadoff double. Casey Frawley sacrificed him to third and Mercer intentionally walked both Braedyn Pruitt and Justin Bass. Tindle, who has now driven in five of Stetson's seven runs in the tournament, fouled a ball down the right field line. John Dortch made a clean catch for Mercer but it was deep enough to bring home Jordan with the game-winner.Â
Tindle also drove in the winning runs in Stetson's win on Wednesday.Â
Â
Justin Dechert (6-2) claimed the win in relief after relieving Jake Hitchcock with two outs in the 10th inning. Hitchcock retired the leadoff hitter in nine of his ten innings and faced the minimum six times. He retired nine in a row before a two-out walk to Steven Karwatt in the 10th. Hitchcock struck out six, walked three, and allowed just three hits. He left after 104 pitches and 9 2/3 innings, the longest a Stetson pitcher has lasted since Clint Chryser went 11 in 1997 against FIU.Â
Â
Mercer had a shot to take the lead in the top of the 11th. The Bears loaded the bases with one out for cleanup hitter Mike Armstrong. Armstrong hit a shallow pop up to center for the second out and pinch runner Richard Bently decided to test Shane Jordan's arm. Jordan's throw was on the money and catcher Mark Rood ? who entered the game defensively in the 10th ? survived a collision at home to prevent the potential winning run from scoring.
Â
Adam Tindle provided and earlier clutch hit when his fourth inning single scored Braedyn Pruitt for the game's first run.Â
Â
Mercer answered in the top of the fifth. Steven Karwatt singled with one out and Casey Stuart doubled him to third. Michael Langley's ground out brought in Karwatt to tie the score but Hitchcock got the final out of the inning with the lead runner on third.Â
Â
Stetson's defense gave Hitchcock a lift in the sixth. With the score still tied, Josh Thompson hit a deep fly to left. Justin Bass, battling the wind, made a lunging catch toward the line and back toward the wall to take away an extra base hit.Â
Â
The Hatters got themselves in trouble in the seventh. Billy Shaughnessy reached when he was hit by a pitch then advanced to second on passed ball on a pitch out. But Hitchcock struck out the next batter and catcher Josh Clendenin threw out Shaughnessy trying to steal third base for the final out.Â
Â
The Hatters will face their second elimination game of the day at 7:00 p.m. against Belmont. The Bruins are the only undefeated team left in the tournament. If Stetson wins, the Hatters will play the later of two games beginning at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. Belmont would face the winner of this afternoon's tilt that pits #4 seed Jacksonville and against #5 seed Gardner-Webb.Â
