DeLand, Fla. - The University of Central Florida sent 17 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs in the eighth inning to defeat Stetson 14-3 Tuesday night at Melching Field. The victory for UCF (24-26) snapped the Hatters (36-13) four-game win streak.
UCF knocked out 10 hits and drew four walks en route to their 11 eighth-inning runs. That eruption broke a 3-3 tie. Derek Abriola (1-2) picked up the win for though he allowed the tying run in the bottom of the seventh he also induced an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded to prevent Stetson from taking over the lead.Â

Chris Duffy led UCF at the plate with a 3-for-4 night that included a two-run homer and a two-run double. Brandon Romans helped out with a bases-loaded triple, his first three-bagger of the year.

The 11 runs in the eighth were the most UCF had scored in an inning this year and the most the Hatters had allowed in a single inning this season. It was Stetson's first loss by double digit runs in 2007.

UCF took the game's first lead in the fourth inning on Duffy's two-run shot to right field, his fifth homer of the year.Â

Adam Tindle drove in runs with singles in the fifth and sixth innings for Stetson to tie it up.Â

Chadd Hartman put the Knights back on top in the seventh with a two-out single to score Duffy but Braedyn Pruitt retaliated with a single to score Shane Jordan, knotting the score at three.Â

Both starting pitchers threw well but did not figure in the decision. UCF's Mitch Herold struck out a career-high nine batters in six innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits a walk.Â

Stetson freshman Robby Donovan turned in 6 2/3 quality innings. He allowed three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and only one walk.Â

At the plate, Tindle, Jordan, and Jeremy Cruz each turned in multi-hit games for the Hatters.Â

Stetson next travels to Nashville, Tenn. to face Lipscomb Friday night at 7:00 p.m. (EDT).Â
