Coral Gables, Fla. ? After an extended lightning delay the Stetson Women's soccer team came back to play strong against the University of Miami, yet fell short to the Hurricanes 2-1. When both teams went into the 15-minute halftime at 7:50 p.m. little did they know the match would not resume until 10:20 p.m.
As it turned out all the scoring took place in the first half. The Hurricanes got things going early when Lauren Singer scored on a header from a cross down the line by Brittany Steinbruch 5:34 into the match.
At 18:55 Steinbruch made the score 2-0 when she scored her ninth goal of the season from 25 out on a shot to the right post. The assists went to Lauren McAdam and Rachel Rigamat.
Miami's second goal served as motivation for the Hatters picked up the pace and started playing their game. Just prior to the half at 41:39 Stetson senior forward Jessica Spencer tightened the match with her third goal of the season. It was a goal worthy of the highlight reels. She scored after chest trapping a crossing pass from junior Bethany Kiedis and drove the ball into the upper goal on a full volley.
The halftime delay came at an inopportune time as the Hatters were beginning to control the pitch. When they returned to the field approximately two and a half hours later the intensity had not waned.
“We played a phenomenal second half”, said Hatter Head Coach Julie Orlowski. “We didn't seem to start playing until we were down 2-0. We had them on their heels the rest of the way.”
Orlowski was quite impressed with the play of Stetson's younger players. “Some of our freshman played really well today”, she said. “Katie Bitetto and Tessa Gavilsky are coming of age.”
With the loss Stetson fell to 2-3-1 on the season while the Hurricanes raised their mark to 4-2-2. The Hatters remain in Miami this weekend and will take on Florida International Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
