Buies Creek, N.C. ? Campbell's 28-0 run across the halftime break blew away a three-point Hatter lead and the Camels cruised away to the 65-45 victory from there in a women's basketball contest Saturday afternoon at Carter Gymnasium. The Hatters fall to 3-16 overall and 1-5 in the Atlantic Sun with the loss while Campbell is now 8-11, 3-3 A-Sun.
Down seven points at halftime having not scored since 4:10 remained in the first half, the Hatters did not dent the scoreboard for the first 12 minutes of the second half either. Senior guard Jamie Nesbit (Peoria, Ariz.) mercifully ended the run with a basket as the shot clock expired with eight minutes remaining in the game.
For the first time in three years since Jan. 10, 2005 vs. Belmont, Stetson did not have a double-figure scorer. Freshman guard Tierra Brown (Orlando, Fla./First Academy), Nesbit and senior guard Kellie Olson (Tucson, Ariz.) led the Hatters with seven points each. Sophomore forward Ashli Jackson (Opelika, Ala.) and junior guard Sharnesha Smith (Kingsland, Ga.) had six points each.
Marlena Murphy had 12 points and 13 rebounds while Lauren Yesh added 11 points and six rebounds to lead Campbell, which out-rebounded Stetson by a 51-31 margin.
Both teams had troubles scoring early, as Campbell led just 5-3 seven minutes into the ballgame. Brown had all seven of Stetson's points as late as 9:30 in, when she found Smith under the basket for a layup as part of a 6-0 run that gave the Hatters their first lead.
Stetson took a 22-19 lead with four minutes left in the half on an Olson three-pointer, but Jessica Mack immediately tied it up for the Camels on a conventional three-point play to cap off a stretch in which she scored seven consecutive points for her team. That sequence began an 8-0 Campbell run that sent the Hatters into the locker room trailing 27-22.
Brown tied for the game scoring high in the first half with seven points and Smith handed out four assists. Mack led Campbell with seven points while Murphy had six points and five rebounds.
Stetson travels to Gardner-Webb for a Monday contest. Tip-off from Paul Porter Arena is set for 7 p.m.
