Jacksonville, Fla. ? Stetson's Top Gun Tessa Gavilsky (Granite City, Ill.) scored early but the Hatters could not hold off a late charge by the Ospreys and dropped a 2-1 overtime game in Jacksonville.
Gavilsky, the leading scorer in the Atlantic Sun Conference, ran her season total to 22 points when she scored her ninth goal of the season at 36:58 of the first half. After getting loose on a breakaway she fired a shot on goal. UNF goalkeeper Erica Lippitt made the save yet couldn't control the rebound, Gavilsky took advantage giving Stetson the 1-0 lead.
Stetson held its own and fended off the UNF attack until 83:49 when a foul in the box led to a Osprey penalty kick and a game tied at one.
Five minutes and fourteen seconds into overtime UNF secured the win and three points in A-Sun play when Elizabeth Gowen scored her first goal of the season. On a free kick from 35 yards she was able to loft a shot over the outstretched Stetson goalkeeper Andrea Garavaglia (Webster Groves, Mo.) for the golden goal.
“We played really well for 70 minutes today,” said Stetson Head Coach Julie Orlowski. “We had many opportunities to put the game away but didn't capitalize, and it cost us.”
Next up for Stetson will be a home game against Belmont on Friday at 5:00 p.m. On Sunday at 1:00 the women will complete their home schedule against Lipscomb. Seniors Cleo Collange (Delray Beach, Fla.), Bethany Kiedis (West Palm Beach, Fla.), Rachel Sweeney (Falls Church, Va.), Sarah Isley (Fort Myers, Fla.), and Frances Ching (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) will be playing in their final home games. Senior Stephanie Webb has been on the sidelines much of the season due to a knee injury. Both games this weekend will be doubleheaders with the men's team.
