DeLand, Fla. ? The Stetson women's tennis team (6-6) evened its 2008 record with a 7-0 win over visiting Northern Illinois at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center Monday afternoon. The Hatters won every match in straight sets.
Sophomores Breanna Atkinson (Bradenton, Fla.) and Katherine Nowicki (Jacksonville, Fla.) improved their doubles record to a team-leading 4-1 with an 8-3 win at #2 doubles over Jenny Edner and Nao Umemura. Juniors Samantha Lange (Middle Island, N.Y.) and Katherine St. Clair (West Palm Beach, Fla.) teamed up for their first win as a duo this season with an 8-3 victory at #3 doubles.
Five of the six singles matches were over very quickly as no Huskie took more than three games in any set in those. Freshman Megan Jones (Miramar, Fla.) endured a spirited effort from NIU's Brooke Forsberg at #4 singles to win 7-6, 6-0.
“We came up with a good team effort in singles and doubles today,” Head Coach Sasha Schmid said. “We are looking forward to a few more days of practice and two more tough conference matches this weekend.”
The Hatters hit the road to face a pair of A-Sun foes this weekend. Stetson takes on USC Upstate at 10 a.m. Friday before meeting East Tennessee State at noon the next day.
