Crittenden, Donovan Help Hatters Salvage Series Finale at LSU

Box Score

Baton Rouge, La. ? Sophomore starting pitcher Robbie Donovan (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) pitched seven-plus strong innings and sophomore designated hitter Aaron Crittenden (Fort Myers, Fla.) homered and drove in five runs to lead the Hatters (7-6) to a 7-2 win at LSU in the finale of a three-game series Sunday at Alex Box Stadium.  Stetson handed the five-time national champions only their second loss of the season against 11 wins.

LSU second baseman Ryan Schimpf led off the bottom of the first with a home run for the second consecutive game in the series and the Tigers would add another run in the third to lead 2-0.  Crittenden's RBI double in the top of the fourth cut the deficit to 2-1, scoring senior center fielder Justin Bass (DeLand, Fla.) who had also doubled.

The Hatters put runners on first and second with nobody out in the fifth and one batter later junior first baseman Jeremy Cruz (Miami, Fla.) came through with a game-tying RBI single up the middle to score freshman third baseman Jacob deGrom (DeLeon Springs, Fla.).  Following a pitching change, Bass smacked a long fly ball to right field that LSU's Rene Escobar mishandled and allowed Cruz to score, giving Stetson a 3-2 lead.

Stetson tacked on another run in the sixth on a hard-hit Crittenden RBI single to bring home sophomore second baseman Casey Frawley (New Haven, Conn.).  Crittenden punctuated Stetson's victory with a long three-run blast off the scoreboard in right field to extend the lead to 7-2 in the ninth inning.

Donovan rebounded from the lead-off home run to strike out six in seven innings, allowing just one more run on four more hits.  He improved his record to 2-1 on the season.  LSU starter Blake Martin took the loss with three runs allowed on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts.  LSU was held scoreless for the final six innings.

Crittenden paced the Hatter lineup with a three for four day.  He drove in five runs and scoring once.  Cruz singled and doubled, collecting an RBI and scoring two runs.  Bass singled twice and doubled, scoring twice.

Stetson returns to Melching Field at 7 p.m. Wednesday for their annual home matchup against archrival UCF.  Bill Topping will broadcast all the action between the Hatters and the Knights with video and audio available through Hatter Vision at the online home of Stetson Athletics, www.gohatters.com.
