Stetson Suffers Series Sweep at Hands of Bruins

Box Score

Nashville, Tenn. ? Stetson could not find an answer to Belmont's offensive onslaught on Sunday and dropped its third and final game of the series 14-3. In all for the series the Bruins scored at least one run in 17 of 24 total offensive innings. Stetson committed 13 errors resulting in 10 unearned runs for Belmont. Four of those 10 runs came in today's game.

Belmont opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning with a pair of unearned runs. The runs were the result of two Bruins base hits sandwiched between three Hatters errors.

Belmont scored two more runs in the bottom of the 3rd on the same play. Daniel Wagner (China Grove, NC) reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to third on a double by Bryan Taylor (Centertown, Ky.), and scored on a squeeze by Matt Zeblo (Raleigh, NC). Taylor also scored on the squeeze play when starting pitcher Nick Pugliese overthrew Jeremy Cruz (Miami, Fla.) who was covering first base.

Stetson scored its first run of the game in the top of the 5th inning. Justin Bass (DeLand, Fla.) led off with a hard-hit single that hopped over the shortstop on a high bounce. He advanced to second on a passed ball and then scored on a single through the left side by Robert Crews (Port Charlotte, Fla.).

Belmont responded in the bottom of the 5th with four runs on a grand slam by Derek Wiley (Dublin, Ca.). It was Wiley's fourth home run and 13th RBI of the weekend. Heading into the 6th inning Stetson was down 11-1.

The Hatters plated a pair of runs in the 6th inning. Casey Frawley (New Haven, Ct.) started it off with a one-out single to right-center. Cruz followed with a smash double deep down the left field line. Frawley scored when Crittenden grounded out to first base, and Cruz scored on an RBI double by Bass.

Bass led the team in hitting with a 3-for-4 afternoon including an RBI and a run scored; Crews was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Stetson fell to 15-21 overall and 6-12 in A-Sun play while Belmont raised its mark to 12-20 overall and 9-12 in conference. Stetson will return home to face the University of South Florida on Melching Field Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. Hatters fans can see all the action on Hatter Vision with play-by-play provided by the voice of Stetson baseball Bill Topping.
