Box Score 2 DeLand, Fla. ? Andy Mauldin (Gainesville, Fla.) hurled his first complete game in his 5th start of the season and defeated Jacksonville University 6-3 in the second game of Saturday's A-Sun doubleheader at Melching Field. The Dolphins split the day after taking the first game by the score of 9-6. Mauldin gave up five hits and three runs, while walking two and striking out five batters.
The offense gave Mauldin the confidence he was looking for by jumping out to the early lead with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Casey Frawley (New Haven, Ct.) led off with a single through the right side of the infield, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Davis (Chambersburg, Pa.), and moved to third when Jeremy Cruz (Miami, Fla.) singled to left field. The next batter, Justin Bass (DeLand, Fla.) singled to left knocking in Frawley. Bass moved to third when Robert Crews (Port Charlotte, Fla.) smashed a double to right field scoring Cruz. Bass scored on a sacrafice fly by Brian Pruitt (Miami, Fla.) and Crews scored the 4th run after a single by Josh Clendenin (Atlanta, Ga.).
In the top of the 4th inning JU put three runs on the board making the score 4-3 into the bottom of the 7th when the Hatters tallied two more runs to complete the scoring. Crews produced the runs with a 2-RBI single to center field with the basses loaded. Frawley and Davis crossed the plate on the play after both players reached base after being hit by a pitch.
Crews was 3-for 4 in the game with three RBI after going 2-for 5 with a pair of RBI in Game 1. Clendenin was 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.
At the end of the day Stetson was 18-26 overall and 8-15 in A-Sun play. Jacksonville finished at 23-19 overall and 12-14 in the conference.
In the first game Stetson opened the scoring with a run in the first inning. Jeff Simpson (Valrico, Fla.) led off with a triple to deep right field. He scored when Cruz grounded out to the right side of the infield. The Hatters added another run in the third after Frawley picked up a bunt single and scored on an error by the Dolphins.
In the bottom of the 5th Stetson added to its lead with a pair of runs. Cruz singled to right field and scored on an RBI single by Bass. He then stole second, advanced to third on a fly ball out and then scored on a double steal.
After JU scored three runs in the top of the 7th, Stetson answered with two in the bottom half to make the score 6-3 Hatters. The following inning the Dolphins exploded for six runs and put the game out of reach.
Stetson starter Nick Pugliese (Deltona, Fla.) pitched well throwing 6 1/3 innings and giving up three runs, two of which were earned. Reliever Robbie Elsemiller (Okeechobee, Fla.) had a tough outing giving up five hits, five runs and taking the loss (2-3) in just 2/3 innings. JU reliever Steven Eagerton picked up the win with jus 1/3 of an inning of relief.
