Hatters Defeat Dolphins to Secure Series Victory

Box Score

DeLand, Fla. ? Robby Donovan (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) pitched Stetson's second consecutive complete game (the first of his career) and Justin Bass (DeLand, Fla.) was 4-for-4 with four RBI to lead the Hatters to a 14-4 win over Jacksonville Sunday afternoon on Melching Field.

Donovan went the distance giving up nine hits and four runs, three of which were earned. He allowed just one walk, while striking out seven Dolphins en route to his third win of the season (3-4).

As a team Stetson totaled 14 runs on 19 hits that included five doubles and a triple. Two of the doubles as well as the triple came off the bat of Bass. Casey Frawley (New Haven, Ct.) equaled his career high of five hits in the game. He was 5-for-6 with a double and three RBI.

Eight of the ten Hatters who came to the plate picked up at least one hit. Jeff Simpson (Valrico, Fla.), Jeremy Cruz (Miami, Fla.), Aaron Crittenden (Fort Myers, Fla.), and Sean Emory (Miami, Fla.) each had a pair of hits in the win.

Stetson won today's rubber-game over JU to tally its second Atlantic Sun Conference series of the season (Campbell University, March 20-21). With the victory Stetson raised its record to 19-26 overall and 9-15 in the A-Sun while Jacksonville dropped to 23-20 and 12-15.

For the third time this weekend the Hatters came out swinging and scored some runs early in the game. They put up four runs in the 1st and three runs in the 2nd.

Simpson opened the 1st with a walk and advanced to third on a Frawley single to right field. He then scored when Cruz grounded out to the shortstop. Crittenden came to the plate with one out and singled up the middle moving Frawley to third. Bass stepped in next and promptly smacked a single to right-center scoring Frawley and moving Crittenden to second. Robert Crews (Port Charlotte, Fla.) joined the fun with an RBI double to left. Crittenden scored and Bass was stopped at third by Coach Markham.

That was all for the Dolphins' starting pitcher Tim Brown. He was removed with just one out in the 1st inning. Bass eventually scored on a wild pitch by the JU reliever and Stetson led 4-0 after one.

The big knock in the 2nd inning came off Frawley's bat. He singled to center field scoring Emory and Simpson who reached on a single and a walk respectively. Frank Florio (Long Valley, NJ) singled with two outs plating Frawley with the third run of the inning and 7th of the game.

Stetson added two runs in the 4th, 5th, and 7th innings and a single run in the 8th to complete the offensive barrage.
