Hatters Drop Doubleheader to Eagles on Saturday

Baseball Stetson University

Hatter Hurler Picks Up Win in First Career Start

Box Score

DeLand, Fla. ? Stetson freshman Will Dorsey (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) pitched 7 complete innings, allowed no walks and struck out 8 batters in his first collegiate start leading the Hatters to a 16-4 win over Bethune-Cookman. He is now 1-0 on the season.

“I was really proud of Will tonight”, said Stetson head coach Pete Dunn. “We were hoping for 4 or 5 innings from him. He kept them off balance and gave us more than we asked for.”

On the offensive side, Stetson went straight to work with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Casey Frawley (New Haven, Ct.) picked up a one-out walk, Justin Bass (DeLand, Fla.) laced a solid single to left field, and then both players scored when Robert Crews (Port Charlotte, Fla.) reached on an error made by the right fielder who could not handle a fly ball as he was charging in to make the play.

The Wildcats scored two runs in the top of the 4th to tie the score and the pace of the game moved along briskly until the bottom of the 5th. It was an inning in which Stetson broke the game wide open with nine runs on seven hits and three BCU errors.

With the score at 11-3 heading into the bottom of the 6th, the Hatters tacked on five more runs to extend the lead to 13. The fatal blow was delivered by freshman Joe Castellanos (Brandon, Fla.) who stepped up as a pinch hitter with two runners on and smashed a deep drive to right field. The ball landed on top of the wall, just out of the reach of the right fielder and appeared to have left the park. As it turned out, the ball dropped back into the field of play at the base of the wall and out of sight of the right fielder. Castellanos never slowed down and cruised in with an inside-the-park home run. It was the first home run of his collegiate career.

As a team the Hatters finished with 15 hits including two doubles a triple and a home run. Fifteen of Stetson's 17 position players saw action in the game. Freshman center fielder Jeff Simpson (Valrico, Fla.) led the way with three singles, fellow freshman Sean Emory (Miami, Fla.) picked up his third double in as many games, Bass had the Hatters' other double, and Frawley delivered his second triple of the season.

Stetson is now 15-17 on the season and Bethune dropped to 17-14. The Hatters will travel to Orlando tomorrow night to take on the University of Central Florida at 6:30 p.m. Hatters fans can hear all the action on Hatter Vision audio with play-by-play provided by the voice of Stetson baseball Bill Topping.
