Coral Gables, Fla. ? The Stetson women's soccer team traveled to Coral Gables Sunday to open the season against Miami and lost by a score of 3-0.
Stetson fell behind 1-0 at the half and had a tough time getting its offense going in the second although it did have five shots. The Hurricanes outshot the Hatters 23-6 overall.
Tessa Gavilsky and Katie Bitetto each came up with two shots on goal, while Heather Berg had one. Stetson certainly was accurate with its shots placing five of its six shots on goal.
The Hurricanes and a tropical storm slowed down the Hatters on Sunday. The game was originally scheduled for Friday night in DeLand, yet had to be moved to Coral Gables due to the excessive rains caused by Tropical Storm Fay. In addition to moving the game, the storm caused Stetson to spend the week indoors and off the practice field.
“Two of their three goals came off of set pieces,” said Hatters Head Coach Julie Orlowski. “The fact that we struggled on their set plays can be explained by our lack of time on the field this week. It had an effect on spacing and intensity.”
Adding to Stetson's difficulties was the fact some players had to play out of position and starting goalkeeper Andrea Garavaglia was not able to play due to injuries. Backup keeper Caitlin Peterson filled in admirably coming up with six saves.
“Overall I was proud of how we played today,” said Orlowski. “After our layoff this week, lack of preparation time, and players out of position, we did well. I am excited to see what this team can do when we are at full strength.”
Next up for the Hatters will be a match up against the University of Hartford on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in DeLand.
