Raleigh, NC ? The Stetson women's soccer team (0-4-0) fell in the final game of the N.C. State/Residence Inn North Women's Soccer Tournament 3-2 to the host school. The Wolf Pack remained undefeated at 5-0-0 on the season.
The Hatters jumped out to an early lead when junior Heather Berg (Fort Myers, Fla.) scored her first goal of the season at 4:20. It was a low shot into the left corner that was set up by fellow junior Emily Yero (Orlando, Fla.).
Stetson played well for the remainder of the first half and held off NC State in a midfield battle. Stetson goalkeeper Andrea Garavaglia (Webster Groves, Mo.) made a pair of big saves and the Hatters went into halftime with the lead.
A little over three minutes into the second half the Wolf Pack scored on a one-touch shot past Garavaglia and the score was tied. Not long after Garavaglia was forced to leave the field due to an injury. Caitlin Peterson (Ocala, Fla.) took over and played 22 minutes before Garvaglia could return. Unfortunately the home team managed to score twice during that time to take a 3-1 lead.
Garavaglia's injury was untimely considering how well she was playing. Overall she made 13 saves in 68 minutes of play.
“It was really good to see Andrea come of age today,” said Head Coach Julie Orlowski. “She made some great saves including two huge stops in the first half to help us maintain our lead.”
Although down late the Hatters continued to apply pressure on their ACC opponent. With two and a half minutes remaining sophomore Tessa Gavilsky (Granite City, Ill) scored her first goal of the season after moving up to play the forward position. It was an unassisted goal that beat the keeper from 15 yards out. Stetson's two goals in the game were the first scored against NC State all season.
“I am proud of the way we played today,” said Orlowski. “We went 3-2 against a very tough ACC team.”
The Hatters will travel to Tampa to play USF on Thursday (7:30 p.m.) before returning Sunday to open a five-game home stand beginning with Embry-Riddle at 2:00 p.m
