DeLand, Fla. - It was a disappointing night at the Stetson Soccer Complex as the Hatters dropped a 2-0 decision to the Camels. With the win Campbell (6-7-1, 5-0-1) moved three points ahead of Stetson (10-2-2, 4-2-1) in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings.
"Of course we are disappointed with the result. I don't think it was our best effort", said Stetson Head Coach T. Logan Fleck.
Campbell opened the scoring with a goal by Keegan Terry (Carrollton, Tx.) in the 38th minute. After picking up a pass from Mitchell Carddenas (Spring, Tx.) he dribbled through the middle and found an opening just inside the right post. The lead lasted until the break. Campbell outshot Stetson 9-6 in the first half.
"We were a bit sluggish in the first half. I have to give them credit, they jumped on us", said Fleck. "We picked it up well in the second half though and gave it a good effort. We kept fighting to get the tying goal."
Stetson improved to 10 shots in the second half, yet luck was not on its side. Campbell increased its lead to 2-0 in the 67th minute.
"We will look to shrug this off, make this game a learning experience, and come back to play well against Mercer on Saturday", added Fleck.
There were a few bright spots on the night, one of which was the spirited play of freshman Jonathan Mendoza (Altamonte Springs, Fla.). The talented freshman hustled from end to end for 90 minutes giving it all he had.
Campbell is now unbeaten in its last five games (4-0-1) against the Hatters since Stetson knocked off the top-seeded Camels 2-1 in the 2005 A-Sun final at Macon, Ga.
The Hatters will look to get back on the winning track when they host the Bears Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
