Chapel Hill, N.C. - Stetson (11-3-2) made the long midweek trip to North Carolina and returns disappointed after a 7-0 loss to the University of North Carolina. The Tarheels (11-2-2) are ranked 4th in the country by the National Soccer coaches Association of America.
Freshman Jonathan Mendoza (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) led the Hatters with three shots while Kevin Munz (Jupiter, Fla.), Gonzalo de Mujica (Weston, Fla.), and Luis Ocejo (Mexico City, Mexico) each had one.
Alex Dixon scored a hat trick for the home team with three consecutive goals. UNC finished with a 21-6 advantage in shots and took six corner kicks while Stetson had two.
Stetson is now 0-2-0 all time against North Carolina. The last time they played was in 1990 and the Tarheels defeated the Hatters by the same 7-0 score.
Although the Hatters would have liked a better result against the Tarheels, their focus remains on conference play. Stetson returns home to take on Florida Gulf Coast Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in DeLand.
Depending on Campbell's result Thursday night when it hosts UNF, Sunday's Stetson vs. FGCU game could be a battle for the regular-season championship. The Hatters are two points behind the Eagles with one game to play. Each win is worth three points while a tie earns one point.
Currently tied with Stetson, Campbell is in the driver's seat for the title. The Camels have two games to play and need just three points as they hold the tie breaker over the Hatters. Campbell defeated Stetson 2-0 last week in DeLand. FGCU is ineligible for post-season play so either Campbell or Stetson will be the #1 seed and host the A-Sun tournament's final four November 12-14.
Sunday will also be senior day for the Hatters. It will be the final regular season home game for Stetson seniors Robert Hodge, Griffin Gilstrap, Kevin Munz, and Set Carpintero.
