DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson women's basketball team (0-6, 0-1 Atlantic Sun) found itself buried under a hail of Florida Gulf Coast (4-2, 1-0 A-Sun) three-pointers Saturday afternoon in a 70-43 loss at the Edmunds Center. FGCU knocked down 13 trifectas in the A-Sun opener for both schools. Junior center Daphnee Frieson (Mobile, Ala.) scored a team-high 13 points for the Hatters.
The three-pointer was the difference all game long as the Eagles shot 13-34 (.333) from beyond the arc, making up for the Hatters holding them to 5-20 shooting on two-point field goals. Eglah Griffin led FGCU with 14 points while Brittany Brown added 10. Courtney Chihil scored eight points and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds.
Frieson continued her strong recent performances on the block, making four of five shots and five of seven free throw attempts; she also grabbed four rebounds, blocked two shots and picked up a steal. Sophomore guard Kerri Simpson (Charleston, Tenn.) scored nine points while senior forward Ashli Jackson (Opelika, Ala.) and freshman forward Janelle Mills (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) shared team rebounding highs with seven each. Mills grabbed three steals as well.
Stetson battled back from an early deficit to take a pair of brief leads midway through the first half, but back-to-back treys from Shannon Murphy and Christina Rivette ignited a 10-0 FGCU run that gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish. The Eagles led 38-21 at halftime.
The Hatters take an eight-day final exam break before traveling to Furman for a 1:30 p.m. contest Sunday, December 13.
