Hatters Drop Doubleheader to Eagles on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DeLand, Fla. ? Stetson suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Boston College Saturday at Melching Field. The Hatters dropped to 0-3 on the season while the Eagles soared to 3-0.

In the opening game Freshman Mark Jones (Palm Coast, Fla.) continued his outstanding play and led the team with a 3-for-5 effort from the batters box and scored two runs. Casey Frawley (New Haven, Ct.), Nick Rickles (Loxahatchee, Fla.) and Frank Florio (Long Valley, NJ) each contributed a pair of hits to the cause.

The Hatters fell behind early before tying the game with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Florio opened with a single to left field, advanced to third on a double by Jones and scored on a passed ball. Jeff Simpson (Valrico, Fla.) followed with a single to center that scored Jones from third. Simpson scored when Robert Crews (Port Charlotte, Fla.) reached on an error and Crews reached home after Jeremy Cruz (Miami, Fla.) doubled down the left field line.

After delivering five runs in the next three innings Stetson went into the top of the seventh with a 10-5 lead. Unfortunately for Hatter fans, that was when the bottom dropped out on the home team. Boston College grabbed the lead with six runs and then added three in the top of the eighth to secure the 14-10 win.

Andy Mauldin (Gainesville, Fla.) started the game for Stetson and pitched four innings giving up five runs and striking out two. Freshman Lindsay Caughel (Orlando, Fla.) pitched the next 2 1/3 innings allowing two hits and three runs. Travis Stortz (Safety Harbor, Fla.) took the mound next and picked up the loss to go to 0-1 on the season. Nick Bohne (Melbourne, Fla.) and David Burns (Seminole, Fla.) finished up for the Hatters. Burns was the only Stetson pitcher who did not give up a run.

Boston College ran six pitchers out to the mound with Kevin Moran (Yarmouthport, Ma.) picking up the win to go to 1-0 on the season. He threw 3 2/3, gave up two runs and struck out three batters.

Later in the evening Stetson was shut out by Boston College in the second game after managing just four hits over nine innings. The hits, all singles, came off the bats of Crews, Rickles, Jones, and Kyle Maulbetsch who picked up his first of the season in the eighth inning.

Freshman Ryan Sweat (DeBary, Fla.) looked solid in his college debut striking out six batters over 6 2/3 innings, yet took the loss to go to 0-1 on the season. Pat Dean (Naugatuck, Ct.) went the distance to pick up the win for the Eagles.

The teams will meet once more time at 12:30 p.m. Sunday on Melching Field. The game will be available to Hatters fans on Hatter Vision at www.gohatters.com. As always, Bill Topping will provide the play by play.
