Box Score Daytona Beach, Fla. ? Stetson jumped out to an early two-run lead yet could not hold on as Bethune-Cookman came back for a 4-2 win Tuesday night in Daytona Beach. It was the Hatters' first loss to the Wildcats in the last five games played.
All of Stetson's scoring came in the second inning. Aaron Crittenden (Fort Myers, Fla.) opened up with a single up the middle. After a Robert Crews (Port Charlotte, Fla.) strike out, freshman catcher Nick Rickles (Loxahatchee, Fla.) stepped up and delivered a two-run blast deep over the left field wall.
The Wildcats answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning on a single-triple-single combination.
Bethune-Cookman took the lead with a single run in the fourth after Chris Brown (Daytona Beach, Fla.) led off with a double and was knocked in by a Peter O'Brien (Miami Gardens, Fla.) single to center field.
BCU added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning on back-to-back doubles by Alejandro Jimenez (San Juan, P.R.) and Justin Hoyte (Orlando, Fla.).
Stetson starting pitcher David Burns (Seminole, Fla.) pitched well going seven complete innings and giving up eight hits and four runs while striking out four. Blake Marsocci (Okeechobee, Fla.) threw one scoreless inning of relief striking out two batters.
Crittenden and Rickles each produced a pair of hits, while Jeremy Cruz (Miami, Fla.) and Frank Florio (Long Valley, NJ) each had one.
Stetson returns home to host the Bright House Invitational Friday thru Sunday. This year's participants are Southern Illinois, South Alabama and Iowa, along with the Hatters. The first game Friday is Southern Illinois vs. South Alabama at 1:00 p.m. Stetson will follow at 7:00 p.m. vs. Iowa. Stetson fans can hear all the games on Hatter Vision found at www.gohatters.com.
