DeLand, Fla.- Casey Frawley (New Haven, Ct.) tallied his third consecutive multiple hit game with two hits against South Alabama, yet it wasn't enough as the Hatters (2-6) dropped a 9-2 decision to the Jaguars (5-4) in the finale of the 2009 Bright House Invitational.
A combination of South Alabama hitting and Stetson defensive miscues led to a two-run deficit in the top of the first inning. The Hatters answered with a single run in the bottom half. Freshman Mark Jones (Palm Coast, Fla.) delivered a one-out double right center and then scored when Jeremy Cruz (Miami, Fla.) singled to left for his fourth RBI of the season.
On a very windy day at Melching Field Frawley led off the third inning with a towering drive to left field that reached high enough to ride the jet stream out of the park and tied the score 2-2. It was his second round tripper of 2009.
Stetson's defensive woes returned in the top of the fifth inning and contributed to a five-run outburst by the visitors. The Jaguars then added two more runs in the sixth inning for the 9-2 final.
Stetson starter Jake Hitchcock (Alachua, Fla.) once again suffered a rough start to the game with little support from his defense. Overall he gave up seven runs, five earned and eight hits. He struck out four batters while walking one. Travis Stortz (Safety Harbor, Fla.) was next to the mound and allowed two earned runs in 2/3 of an inning. Lindsay Caughel (Orlando, Fla.), Robbie Powell (Punta Gorda, Fla.) and Ian Thompson (St. Petersburg, Fla.) finished up for Stetson giving up no runs in the process. Thompson struck out a pair of batters in two innings of work.
In addition to Frawley, Jones had a pair of hits going 2-for-5 in the game. He is now leading the team in batting at .438 on the season. Fellow freshman Ethan Maskolunas (Lakeland, Fla.) pinch hit in the ninth inning and picked up the first hit of his collegiate career.
