Strong Pitching, Timely Hitting Lead Hatters Over Indiana

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DeLand, Fla.- Starting pitcher David Burns (Seminole, Fla.) shut out the visiting Hoosiers for five complete innings and led Stetson (8-12) to an 11-1 win over Indiana (6-11) Wednesday night at Melching Field. He allowed just three hits, struck out one batter and secured his first victory of the season (1-3). After starting the season at 2-9, Stetson has won five of its last six games.

Offensively freshman Alex Hudak (Sorrento, Fla.) took charge with two hits including a three-RBI triple that reached the wall in left-center. Hudak is hitting .533 (8-for-15) over the past four games raising his season average to .308.

Also picking up multiple hits in the game were Jeremy Cruz (Miami, Fla.) and Jacob deGrom (DeLeon Springs, Fla.) each with two. Cruz picked up his team-leading 25th RBI of the season with an RBI single down the left field line in the seventh inning. deGrom scored a pair of runs.

Stetson opened the scoring with single runs in the first and third innings before opening up the lead with three runs in the fifth. Hudak and Casey Frawley (New Haven, Ct.) led off with back to back singles. Hudak was out at third on a fielder's choice by Cruz and the bases filled up after an Aaron Crittenden (Fort Myers, Fla.) base on balls. Frawley scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Rickles and Cruz scored on an RBI single through the left side by Jeff Simpson (Valrico, Fla.). The third run came on another single, this time by Mark Jones (Palm Coast, Fla.).

Simpson returned to the lineup for the first time since crashing into the wall at Betune-Cookman on February 24 and injuring his shoulder.

As a team the Hatters scored 11 runs, picked up 11 hits, and drew 11 walks in the game. Defensively Stetson committed no errors for just the second time this season.

Stetson will be heading to Nashville to play Lipscomb this weekend. Game times are Friday night at 7:00 p.m., Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. All times are eastern. Stetson fans can hear all the games on Hatter Vision found at www.gohatters.com. The voice of Hatters baseball Bill Topping will call the action.
