Offense Opens Up While Sweat Closes Down Bruins

Box Score

DeLand, Fla. ? Freshman Ryan Sweat (DeBary, Fla.) shut down the Bruins for the final five innings allowing Stetson (17-21, 8-9) to come back for a 11-6 win over Belmont (21-17, 12-8) Saturday afternoon on Melching Field. Sweat allowed just two hits over five scoreless innings and struck out six batters. He improved his record to 3-1 on the season. Matt Hemann (Northbrook, Ill.) took the loss and dropped to 3-2.

Every member of Stetson's lineup that stepped into the batter's box had at least one hit in the game. Sean Emory (Miami, Fla.) and Casey Frawley (New Haven, Ct.) led the way with three hits each. Emory was 3-for-5 with three RBI and Frawley finished 3-for-5 with a triple and an RBI. Stetson's other extra base hits were doubles by Aaron Crittenden (Fort Myers, Fla.), Nick Rickles (Loxahatchee, Fla.) and Frank Florio (Long Valley, NJ), and a two-run home run by Crittenden, his sixth of the season and second in the past two games against Belmont.

Belmont jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a run in the first inning and three more in the second. In the bottom of the third Stetson answered with four runs of its own. After the first two batters were retired Jeff Simpson (Valrico, Fla.) started the rally with a single through the right side of the infield. Frawley then reached and advanced to second on an error by the third baseman. Jeremy Cruz (Miami, Fla.) followed with a base hit up the middle that scored both Simpson and Frawley. One pitch later Crittenden delivered an 0-1 fastball deep down the line and over the fence and both players trotted home and tied the score at four.

The teams swapped two-run innings in the top of the fourth and the bottom of the fifth until Stetson's offense took over and scored the final five runs of the game.

In the seventh Florio and Mark Jones (Palm Coast, Fla.) led off with consecutive walks. With one out Emory poked a base hit between the first and second basemen scoring Florio. Jones scored on the next play, a groundout by Simpson, and then Emory scored the final run on Frawley's triple to right field.

The key hit in Stetson's two-run eighth inning was a single to right by Emory to right field scoring Jones and Jacob DeGrom (DeLeon Springs, Fla.).
