Hatters Score Eight in the Eighth to Upend Salukis

Baseball Stetson University

Staff Fails to Hold 10-Run Lead, Stetson Falls to UCF

Box Score

Orlando, Fla. ? Seven Hatter pitchers took the mound in an effort to find one that could stop the Knights Tuesday night in Orlando. Unfortunately for the visitors the search was in vain and Stetson (17-23) fell 13-12 to UCF (13-25).

Casey Frawley (New Haven, Ct.) hit his ninth home run of the season leading off the ninth to get Stetson back to within a run. It was a five-run eighth inning, however, that secured the win for the Knights.

Nick Bohne (Melbourne, Fla.) took the loss giving up five runs in two thirds of an inning. He fell to 1-1 on the season. D.J. Hicks earned the win for UCF after tossing three innings and allowing just one run. He raised his record to 3-3.

The Hatters totaled 13 hits in the game led by Frawley and Jeremy Cruz (Miami, Fla.) with three each.

Stetson jumped out early with a run in the top of the first inning. Sean Emory (Miami, Fla.) led off with a walk and then advanced to third base when Jeff Simpson (Valrico, Fla.) reached on an error by the second baseman. The next batter, Frawley grounded into a double play scoring Emory from third and the Hatters had a 1-0 lead.

Stetson sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the fourth and came away with nine runs on nine hits including home runs from Aaron Crittenden (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Emory. It was Crittenden's eighth, and the first of the season for Emory. Eight of the nine in the lineup scored a run with Frawley scoring twice.

UCF responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, and then Stetson answered with a single run in the top of the fifth. Frank Florio (Long Valley, NJ) led off and made it all the way to third base after belting a fly ball deep and high down the right field line that fell in and was scored as an error. Two batters later Florio scored on an RBI groundout to shortstop by Jones and became the ninth different Hatter to cross the plate in the game.

The Knights took a chunk out of the Hatters' lead in the sixth with three runs off reliever Ian Thompson (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and added one more in the seventh against Blake Marsocci (Okeechobee, Fla.) to draw to within three at 11-8. UCF would have scored more had it not been for an outstanding diving stab of a line drive by Frawley with one out and a runner on third.

Next up Stetson will travel to North Carolina for a weekend conference series with Campbell. The Hatters and Camels will play a Friday doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m., and a single game Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Stetson fans can hear all the games on Hatter Vision found at www.gohatters.com. Tickets for all Stetson home games can be purchased on line at gohatters.com or at the gate on game day.
