Box Score 2 Buies Creek, N.C. ? Junior starting pitcher Robby Donovan (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) struck out eight batters in seven and two-thirds innings to earn his fourth win of the season Friday night as the Stetson baseball team (18-24, 9-11 Atlantic Sun) took the second game of a conference doubleheader from host Campbell (22-18, 6-13 A-Sun) by a 5-2 score at Taylor Field. Campbell beat Stetson 13-7 in the opener earlier this afternoon. Junior designated hitter Aaron Crittenden (Fort Myers, Fla.) homered in both games; in all, Stetson batters hit six home runs in the doubleheader.
Sophomore center fielder Jeff Simpson (Valrico, Fla.) came up with a two-out RBI single to center field in the top of the seventh that broke a 2-2 tie and put the Hatters ahead for good in the nightcap. Crittenden and freshman second baseman Mark Jones (Palm Coast, Fla.) hit solo homers in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to give Stetson some insurance runs. Junior lefthander David Burns (Seminole, Fla.) pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth, punctuated by a game-ending strikeout of Campbell 2B Ellis Lowe, to earn his second save of the season.
An early 2-0 lead on junior shortstop Casey Frawley's (New Haven, Conn.) first inning two-run home run, his 10th of the season, was wiped away entirely by Camels right fielder Ryan Hamme, who hit a solo homer in the bottom of the first and an RBI double with two out in the bottom of the third. Those would prove to be the only runs scored off Donovan or any Hatter pitcher in the game.
Simpson and freshman catcher Nick Rickles (Loxahatchee, Fla.) had two base hits for Stetson in the nightcap with Simpson adding his fourth stolen base as well. Donovan gave up two runs on five hits and four walks in 7.2 frames with eight strikeouts. Logan Davis took the loss for Campbell, his first in seven decisions this year, in 7.1 innings with four runs allowed (three earned) on seven hits and three walks; he fanned four.
Stetson led the opener 2-0 in the fourth after a Camel error and an RBI single by sophomore third baseman Sean Emory (Miami, Fla.) plated two runs. However, Campbell struck back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, abetted by three Hatter errors, to take the lead. The Hatters would rally to tie, using a Rickles RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth and an Emory RBI double in the sixth to knot it 6-6, but the Camels scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth against two different pitchers to put the game out of reach.
Senior outfielder Jeremy Cruz (Miami, Fla.) hit long home runs in his final two at-bats to help bring the Hatters a little closer while Crittenden went back-to-back with Cruz to lead off the top of the ninth and cut the margin to 13-7, but that was as close as Stetson would get. Jeff Rydman pitched seven strong innings with eight strikeouts to earn the win for Campbell while senior starter Andy Mauldin (Gainesville, Fla.) was tagged with the loss for the Hatters. Cruz and Emory combined to go six for seven with four RBI. Campbell DH Zach Johnson, the nation's leader in doubles, smacked three more in the first game to increase his total to 26 on the season.
The three-game A-Sun series concludes tomorrow afternoon with a single game at 1 p.m. As was the case today, Campbell's live Fighting Camel Zone broadcast will be pushed to GoHatters.com for Hatter Vision subscribers to log in and watch at no extra cost.
