Hatters Deliver Ninth Inning Comeback Win Over Wildcats

Box Score

Orlando, Fla. ? With no outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning Jeremy Cruz (Miami, Fla.) jumped on the first pitch he saw, delivered a game-winning two-RBI single to left field scoring Tyler Erickson (Morriston, Fla.) and Mark Jones (Palm Coast, Fla.), and gave Stetson an 8-7 win over Bethune-Cookman Tuesday night on Melching Field. It was the second consecutive game Cruz knocked in the winning run.

The enthusiasm on the team bench was electric as the Hatters (20-24) scored all eight runs in the final four innings to secure the come from behind win over the Wildcats (24-22) and complete the season series with a 3-1 advantage.

Cruz led the offensive attack with two hits and four RBI on the night. He was the only Hatter with more than one hit. As a team Stetson had just seven hits and took advantage of 11 walks by Wildcat pitchers. Casey Frawley (New Haven, Ct.) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two walks. Freshman catcher Nick Rickles (Loxahatchee, Fla.) finished 1-for-3 with an RBI triple, his first three-bagger of the season.

Not unusual for a midweek game, Stetson sent seven pitchers to the mound. After the first three allowed seven runs over seven innings, the final four Ian Thompson (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Tucker Donahue (Coral Springs, Fla.), Travis Stortz (Safety Harbor, Fla.), and Nick Bohne (Melbourne, Fla.) held BC-U scoreless. Bohne pitched the last two-thirds of an inning striking out one batter and picking up the win to raise his season record to 3-1.

After falling behind 5-0 early, Stetson scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to get back to within two. The key hit in of the inning was a two-RBI single to right center by Cruz plating Sean Emory (Miami, Fla.) and Jones who both walked to open the inning.

The Wildcats returned serve with two more runs in the top of the seventh before the Hatters scored one in the bottom half, one in the eighth and then completed the ninth inning comeback with three more runs.

Next up Stetson will host Florida International Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. and then North Florida on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
