Athens, Ga. - The three-player contingent representing the Stetson women's tennis team this weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championships completed play on Sunday with sophomore Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay) reaching the consolation singles quarterfinals. She and her doubles partner, senior Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) reached the main draw quarterfinals as well.
Purushotham and de los Santos, the nation's 56th-ranked doubles tandem and the fifth seed in the bracket, edged a Georgia pair 9-8 and beat a USF duo 8-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the doubles draw, where they ran into the bracket's top-seeded pairing, ITA national #16 Bianca Eichkorn and Anna Bartenstein of Miami (Fla.). The Hurricanes defeated the Hatters 8-2 in their quarterfinal matchup.
In singles play, the Hatters were represented by de los Santos and junior Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.). Neither had any luck in the main draw as third-seeded Irene Rehberger of USF and fourth-seeded Nadja Gilchrist of host school Georgia defeated the two, respectively, in the first round. Rehberger is ranked 30th nationally and Gilchrist 31st.
De los Santos was at least able to reach the consolation draw's quarterfinals with straight set wins over Maria Spenceley (FIU) and Elizabeth Kilborn (Georgia Tech). Gunning again was thwarted by a ranked player in her first attempt, this time #113 Christine Ngo of Georgia Tech.
Stetson will complete the fall portion of its schedule November 5-7 in Orlando at the UCF Invitational.
