Hatters Drop Series Opener to Bulldogs

Athens, Ga. - Sophomore Robert Crews (Port Charlotte, Fla.) was 2-for-4 and senior Aaron Crittenden blasted his second home run of the season, yet Stetson (3-2) dropped the series opener 12-2 to the University of Georgia (4-2) Friday evening in Athens, Georgia.

Stetson starter Lindsey Caughel (Orlando, Fla.) surrendered 10 runs and 11 hits over 4 2/3 while striking out three batters and fell to 0-1 on the season. Georgia starter Justin Grimm tossed 5 2/3 giving up just two hits and no runs and striking out seven Hatters.

"We didn't pitch real well and they made us pay for it", said Stetson head coach Pete Dunn. "This is a good club we played today."

Georgia scored in each of the 2nd through 6th innings to jump out to a 12-0 lead on Stetson.

"We had a couple of defensive lapses that opened up big innings for them", continued Dunn.

In the bottom of the 7th inning Stetson's Tucker Donahue (Coral Springs, Fla.) entered the game and shut down the Bulldogs for the final two innings. He threw two complete innings allowing no runs and giving up just one hit while striking out a pair of Bulldog batters.

"Very proud of him [Donahue], maybe he earned something out there tonight", said Dunn. "He may have put himself in a position to get more innings out of the bullpen."

Stetson's scoring moment came in the top of the 8th. Mark Jones (Palm Coast, Fla.) led off with a frozen rope single to centerfield, and Crittenden followed with a monster shot that cleared the giant scoreboard in right field by at least 20 feet. According to the Georgia sports information director it was one of the longest home runs he has ever seen at Foley Field.

Stetson will take on Georgia in game two of the three-game set Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Hatters fans can catch the audio broadcast on Hatter Vision by going to www.gohatters.com. The voice of Stetson baseball Bill Topping will call the action.
