DeLand, Fla. - Freshman Kurt Schluter (Jupiter, Fla.) took a no-hitter into the 9th inning and led Stetson (5-8) to a 1-0 win over Central Michigan (4-4) Wednesday night on Melching Field. Schluter threw 111 pitches over 8 1/3 innings, struck out 10 and walked two Chippewas.
After CMU delivered a single up the middle with one out, Senior Ian Thompson (St. Petersburg, Fla.) took the mound and picked up his first save of the season by inducing a game-ending double play. It was a tremendous play by third baseman Mark Jones (Palm Coast, Fla.) who made a diving stab on a shot down the line, jumped to his feet, stepped on the bag and fired across the diamond to Ryan Lashley (Lake Worth, Fla.) who was in full stretch to nip the runner by half a step.
"Schluter went out there and challenged hitters all night. Of course I would have loved to see him get the no-hitter but it was a tremendous performance and we needed it tonight", said Stetson head coach Pete Dunn. "I am very proud of him. For a freshman he went out there and pitched well beyond his years. He wasn't intimidated; he just dominated a very good team that just swept UCF in Orlando."
Overall Stetson scored one run on six hits and committed no errors. Central Michigan finished with no runs on one hit and committed a pair of miscues.
Stetson's lone run came in the bottom of the 3rd inning. With one out James Rasmussen (Tallahassee, Fla.) singled through the left side and then advanced to second on a Jeff Simpson (Valrico, Fla.) single to left field. After another out Jones walked to load the bases and Aaron Crittenden (Fort Myers, Fla.) plated Rasmussen with a sharp single between the first and second basemen.
Simpson was 2-for-3 on the night boosting his batting average to .475. It was his seventh consecutive game with two hits and he extended his current hit streak to eight games. Rasmussen was also 2-for-3 at the plate for the Hatters.
