DeLand, Fla. - Stetson scored three runs in the top of the 8th inning to get to within a pair, yet could not complete the comeback and fell 11-9 to Bethune-Cookman Tuesday night in Daytona Beach. The Hatters fell to 8-9 on the season while the Wildcats improved to 9-9.
Senior Aaron Crittenden (Fort Myers, Fla.) led Stetson offensively going 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBI. He was the only Hatter with multiple hits. Junior Jeff Simpson (Valrico, Fla.) singled in his first at bat to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.
Stetson starter and current Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week Kurt Schluter (Jupiter, Fla.) was not able to continue the magic from his last outing when he took a no-hitter into the 9th inning and struck out 10 against Central Michigan. Tonight against B-CU he surrendered 10 hits and 11 runs in 3 1/3 innings of work. Control was an issue as he allowed five walks against just one strike out.
The good news on the mound was that sophomore Robbie Powell (Punta Gorda, Fla.) entered the game, threw the final 4 2/3 innings, and shut down the Wildcats. He did not allow a run and struck out four batters.
Next up for Stetson is a home game against UCF at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday and then the opening series of the A-Sun schedule this weekend against FGCU in DeLand.
