DeLand, Fla. - Stetson's Jacob deGrom (DeLeon Springs, Fla.) and Florida Gulf Coast's Chris Sale (Lakeland, Fla.) faced off in a classic pitching duel Friday night on Melching Field with Sale coming out on top. deGrom threw six complete allowing nine hits, three runs, two earned runs, and he struck out five. Sale tossed eight innings and gave up seven hits and one run while striking out 14 Hatters. Neither pitcher surrendered a walk.
With the loss Stetson fell to 8-11 overall and 0-1 in Atlantic Sun Conference play. FGCU raised its season record to 11-5, and 4-0 in the conference.
Stetson's Spencer Theisen (Longwood, Fla.) was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Jeff Simpson (Valrico, Fla.) knocked in the Hatters' second run on his second hit of the game in the 9th inning. He extended his current hitting streak to 14 games.
Mike Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) was the top hitter for the Eagles going 4-for-5 with three runs scored. Austin Gaines (Dunedin, Fla.) finished 3-for-5 with 3 RBI.
FGCU opened the scoring with a solo run in the top of the 1st inning and then Stetson tied the score with a run in the bottom of the 4th. Kurt Schluter (Jupiter, Fla.) belted a one-out double to right field, advanced to third on a ground out, and then scored on an RBI single to center by Theisen.
The Eagles scored a pair of runs in the top of the 5th and another in the 9th to take a 4-1 lead. Stetson however , was not done scoring a run and getting the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Lashley (Lake Worth, Fla.) led off with a double and Theisen hustled out an infield single moving Lashley to third. After the next to batters were retired Simpson stepped in and ripped a single to left field to plate Lashley. Unfortunately it was not to be as the next batter Mark Jones (Palm Coast, Fla.) grounded out to end the game. FGCU's Jack Wagoner (Berlin, Conn.) threw the final inning and picked up his third save of the season.
