Dayton, Nev. - Junior Alexandria Buelow (Palm City, Fla.) shot a one over par 73 to lead the Stetson women's golf team in its first round of the 2011-12 season Monday at the Wolf Pack Classic. Buelow sits tied for fourth place, four strokes off the lead, while the Hatters are eighth as a team at 23 over par. Today's scheduled second round was cancelled due to high winds, reducing the Wolf Pack Classic to a 36-hole event.
Sophomore Claudia Redinger (Durban, South Africa) got her second season with the Hatters off to a strong start with a 78, the second-lowest round of her college career, to put herself in a tie for 20th place in the 57-golfer field. Sophomore Sammi Smith (Louisville, Ky.) shot 79 and is tied for 27th while senior Lauren Cate (St. Augustine, Fla.) and sophomore Jenna Hoecker (Rochester, N.Y.) each shot nine over par 81 and are tied for 41st. Competing as an individual, sophomore Ryan Ashburn (Largo, Fla.) is tied for 48th place after opening with an 82.
Buelow's 73 leaves her in a fourth-place tie with Peppina Kaija (San Francisco), Jenna Zamprelli (Wyoming) and Michelle Yang (UC Irvine) at one over par, four strokes behind co-leaders Sarah Baek (UC Irvine) and Juanita Rico (Wyoming). Bowling Green's Paula DiFrancesco opened with a one under par 71 to hold third place overnight.
UC Irvine leads the Wolf Pack Classic at 10 over par, two strokes ahead of Wyoming and three clear of San Francisco. Host Nevada follows in fourth place at 17 over par with Montana (+18), Bowling Green (+19), Sacramento State (+20) all narrowly ahead of the 23 over par Hatters as well. Utah Valley and Old Dominion round out the field at +33 and +34, respectively.
Today's play was supposed to span 36 holes, but with winds consistently gusting in the vicinity of 30 miles per hour in the afternoon, tournament officials made the decision to cancel the second round. The Wolf Pack Classic will conclude tomorrow with a final round of 18 holes at the par 72, 6,146-yard Dayton Valley Golf Club.
