DeLand, Fla. - Sophomore midfielder Steven Saballos (Miami, Fla.) scored his first career goal to push the Stetson men's soccer team (3-4-0) to a 1-0 win over visiting Temple (3-2-0) in the finale of the Stetson Soccer Classic on Sunday. Sophomore goalkeeper Andreas Schnabl (Blaichach, Germany) moved into a fourth place tie in school history with his seventh career shutout as the Hatters snapped a four-match losing streak in the process.
Saballos scored the only goal Stetson would need in the 35th minute of the first half. Senior midfielder Gonzalo de Mujica (Buenos Aires, Argentina) got the play started with a corner kick into the box, which eventually settled at the feet of Saballos. He lasered a shot that was saved by Temple goalkeeper Bobby Rosato, but the rebound found its way through the crowd right back to him. Saballos's second shot found the back of the net for a 1-0 Hatters advantage.
Schnabl made six saves and the young back line of sophomore JJ Bostic (Dunedin, Fla.), sophomore Raffaele Centofanti (Miami Lakes, Fla.) and freshman JJ Lofthouse-Smith (London, England) all played 90 strong minutes to keep the clean sheet intact. Stetson out-shot the Owls 24-15 in the match and enjoyed a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks. Tyler Witmer led all players in the match with six shots for Temple.
The Hatters are back in action Sunday, Sept. 25 when they travel to A-Sun rival Jacksonville's campus for a neutral-site matchup with George Washington. That match starts at 12:00 pm.
