Big Innings Doom Hatters at FSU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla—Fourth-ranked Florida State scored 10 runs in the final three innings in securing a 13-3 win over Stetson, Wednesday at Dick Howser Stadium.

With the game tied 3-3, Florida State (32-9) scored twice in the sixth, five times in the seventh and three more times in the eighth.

After tying the game in the fourth, the Seminoles regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Stetson (17-26) stranded a pair of runners in the top of the inning, and Florida State responded by plating a pair of runs. DeLuzio knocked in the first run with a triple, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Smith to make it 5-3.

FSU broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh. Two sacrifice flies, a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a two-run double by Johsn Sansone did the damage and made it a 10-3 game.

Patrick Mazeika gave Stetson an early 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. The home run was Mazeika's first of the season.

Florida State took advantage of some miscues by the Hatters to score two runs in the bottom of the first. After a one-out walk to Brett Knief, John Nogowski doubled on a ball that was lost in the sun by right fielder Robert Bruce. Jose Brizuela followed with a single to Knieff, and Nogowski scored on the back end of a double steal to make it a 2-1 game.

Stetson loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third and Mazeika tied it up when his fielder's choice grounder scored Kevin Fagan to make it 2-2.

The Hatters regained the lead in the fourth. Garrett Russini led off with a double and scored two batters later on Kyle Zech's single up the middle.

But the 3-2 lead didn't last long as FSU tied it in the bottom of the inning. Ben DeLuzio was hit by a pitch to start the inning, immediately stole second, advanced to third on a ground out by Casey Smith, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Danny De La Calle.

Stetson loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh after FSU reliever Dylan Silva allowed a double to K'Shawn Smith, and plunked Tyler Bocock and Mazeika on consecutive pitches. After a pitching change, Powers nearly tied the game with a grounder to the right side but FSU second baseman John Sansone made a nice play to take away the hit and end the rally.

Tyler Warmoth (1-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing tworuns on two hits in two innings of work.

Mazeika, Russini, Zech, Fernland and Smith each had one hit for the Hatters.

Sansone had three hit for the Seminoles. Silva (3-0) earned the victory with 1.2 shutout innings.

The Hatters open a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series at North Florida, 6 p.m., Friday in Jacksonville.
