DeLAND—FGCU's Miguel Jaime and Skylar Wilks each scored goals, negating a furious second-half effort by Stetson as the Hatters suffered a 2-0 setback to their Atlantic Sun Conference rival, Saturday at the Athletic Training Center.
This was the A-Sun opener for the Hatters and the loss drops their overall record to 4-5-1.
The Eagles (4-2-1, 2-0-0) gained early control of the match when Jaime scored in the sixth minute. He collected a redirected throw-in from Justin Gavin and sneaked a shot past Stetson keeper Paul Ladwig for a 1-0 lead.
Leading 1-0 at halftime, FGCU added to its lead in the 50th minute when Wilks took a cross from Kamar Marriott in the center of the box and scored from 15 yards away to make it 2-0.
Stetson mounted an intense rally in the second half, getting eight shots total and four on-goal in the final 45 minutes, but they couldn't penetrate FGCU keeper Nathan Ingham. Stetson also had a Daniel O'Brien goal called back by offsides in the 57th minute.
Ladwig finished the match by making four saves on 12 shots. Ingham finished with five saves total.
Jeppe Moe led the Hatters with three shots. Stetson finished with 10 as a team.
Quoting Head Coach Ernie Yarborough
“I thought over the course of the 90 minutes we were as good on the night as they were. Our game is an evil mistress sometimes in the sense that we created a lot and didn't take care of our chances and they took care of some things that we gave them, and that's the game of football. I think we're right where we need to be. If that's the best in our conference for the last few years then I really like where we are to challenge the rest of the season.”
