DeLand, Fla. -- Aisha Turner led seven Hatters in double figures with a career-high 20 points as Stetson rolled to a 107-30 season-opening victory over Trinity Baptist Saturday morning at the Edmunds Center.
The Hatters (1-0) will turn right around and play at Georgia at 2 p.m. Sunday.
"It was good; we needed to get the jitters out," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. "I didn't want to go into Georgia with it being our first game. It gave us an opportunity to give people a lot of minutes. We really have to work on some things, but I was proud of our effort."
Junior Breana Bey went a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and finished with 18 points in her first game as a Hatter. Brianti Saunders scored 15 points, and DeAsia Beal scored 12.
Four Hatter freshmen made their collegiate debuts, and all four contributed offensively. Myka Johnson-Matthews scored 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, McKenna Beach scored 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting, Ida Andersson scored 10 points and picked up a game-high 18 rebounds, and Re'Nique Francis scored six points with six rebounds.
"I was probably most proud of Ida because she didn't shoot the ball well," Bria said. "I talk a lot about if you're not shooting well, you've got to find other ways to contribute. She came out with 18 rebounds, and that's pretty significant. I thought that showed a lot about her character."
Experiencing the new NCAA four-quarter format for the first time, Stetson led 38-9 after the opening 10 minutes, and 62-16 at halftime. The Hatters shot just over 60 percent for the game with 51 rebounds and 32 assists.
Trinity Baptist (2-5), an NCCAA school, was led by Kaneesha Ellick who had 13 points.
The Hatters will be meeting Georgia (0-0) for the first time since 2005.
"We've prepared all week for Georgia as much as we can," Bria said. "It's hard to simulate them. I think we hopefully got these jitters out. It will be their opening game, so I'm sure we'll have a good crowd. We're going to find out where we are and exactly what we look like. I think tomorrow's game will show us a lot more than what today's game showed us."
