Saunders Scores Her 1000th Point in Hatters' Win

DeLand, Fla. -- Brianti Saunders owned the spotlight early, scoring her 1,000th career point in the opening minutes of the game.

In the end, Stetson received contributions throughout its entire line-up in a 84-47 victory over Flagler College Friday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

Aisha Turner led five players in double figures with 16 points as the Hatters improved to 5-3 on the season.

Saunders became the 22nd player in school history to reach the 1,000-point milestone with a lay-up at the 2:30 mark of the first quarter.

“I am just honored to get to 1,000 points,” Saunders said, “Not many people can do that in their careers, so I was just happy to get it.  It feels great.”

DeAsia Beal recorded her first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while hitting all four of her shots from behind the arc.

Stetson shot 54.5 percent for the game and outrebounded Flagler 41-26.

“I thought we were really sloppy in the first half,” Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. “I wasn't pleased with our start. I think we came out a lot better in the second half. I was much more pleased with our tempo and how aggressive we were. We were a lot better defensively in the second half, too.”

Breana Bey (15 points), Saunders (12 points), and Ida Andersson (11 points) also scored in double figures for the Hatters, who surpassed 80 points for the second straight game.

Teosha Ray led the Saints (3-1) with 18 points.

A boisterous crowd of 2,451, mostly students from local elementary schools, packed the Edmunds Center for the team's annual Education Day.

“It is the most fun game of the year,” Bria said. “It's really good we get to do this, and I think the kids are just awesome.”

Stetson concluded a busy three-week stretch to open the season with five victories in eight games, including a 4-0 mark at home.

“I think we are playing great,” Saunders said. “We are improving every game, so we are just taking it one step at a time to get better.”

The Hatters will take a week off for finals before visiting Eastern Illinois on Dec. 13.
