DeLand, Fla. -- Despite a strong 19-point, eight-rebound performance from junior Breana Bey, Stetson fell 61-56 to visiting USC Upstate in an Atlantic Sun Conference game Monday night at the Edmunds Center.
Brianti Saunders hit four 3-pointers and scored 17 points for the Hatters (10-7, 1-2 A-Sun), who dropped just their second home game of the season (7-2).
Brittany Clency led USC Upstate (11-7, 2-1) with 23 points.
"I didn't think we played a very good first half," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. "The point production in the second quarter really hurt us. I thought the second half we played with much better energy and played a lot better. We probably gave them too many offensive rebounds. I thought that hurt us, especially down the stretch."
Bey scored 12 of her 19 points in the second half, helping Stetson go from down eight in the third quarter to up seven early in the fourth quarter.
"(Bey) got a lot of good rebounds and really put the team on her back," Bria said. "She put us in a good position to win. We just needed to get some stops, and we didn't get them."
Saunders surpassed 1200 career points and extended her double-figures scoring streak to a season-long 17 games.
Stetson will begin a two-game road trip at Kennesaw State at 2 p.m. Saturday.
