Hackett, Ammon Lead Hatters to Conference Win

DeLAND—Freshmen Ellie Hackett and Lily Ammon scored their first career goals to lift Stetson to its fourth straight win with a 2-0 victory over Atlantic Sun Conference foe USC Upstate, Sunday at the Athletic Training Center.

The Hatters (5-4-2, 2-0-0) also swept an ASUN weekend series for the first time in three years on their way to cracking the .500 mark for the first time all season. The current winning streak is Stetson's longest since win five straight in 2007. But a lengthy weather delay and a stingy Upstate defense forced the Hatters to wait before celebrating.

Stetson started slowly as it took the Hatters more than 15 minutes to get off their first shot. Three more shots followed over the next four minutes before a lightning delay forced the teams off the field for more than two hours.

The Hatters continued to control play after the match resumed, and really picked up the pace after halftime. They finally cracked the scoring column when Hackett got free in front of the goal during a scrum and poked in a rebound of a Sarah Collins shot attempt in the 76th minute.

Leading 1-0, the Hatters continued their assault of Upstate's goal. Ammon made it a 2-0 affair in the 87th minute when she scored from the left side of the box on a double assist from Allison Zaccheo and Briana Camargo.

Stetson dominated play for 90 minutes, out-shooting the Spartans (0-11-2, 0-3-0) by a 25-7 margin. Upstate keeper Brooke Bailey made three saves while Stetson's Emily Plotz made one in recording her third shutout of the season.

The Hatters open a two-game road trip on Friday when they visit Lipscomb, 8 p.m., in Nashville, Tenn.
