Hatters Drop Regular Season Finale at Jacksonville, 3-2

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—Erin Avers and Sarah Collins scored goals for Stetson but Jacksonville was one better as the Dolphins handed the Hatters a 3-2 Atlantic Sun Conference loss in the regular season finale for both teams, Friday at Southern Oak Stadium.

The loss drops the Hatters to 8-6-2 overall and 5-2-0 in ASUN play. Stetson will learn its post-season fate following the conclusion of Saturday's slate of conference game. The Hatters have already clinched at least the third seed for the ASUN Tournament. Stetson could host a tournament quarterfinal game next weekend or could receive a "bye" into the semifinals.

"We're disappointed in tonight's result but it doesn't change any of our goals," Stetson head coach Manoj Khettry said. "It potentially makes things a bit more difficult, but it doesn't change anything. We created more than enough chances tonight to score more than two goals but we weren't able to capitalize. I was pleased, however, that we never gave up. We played hard and were mentally in the game even when we were down by two goals."

Stetson took an early 1-0 lead when Erin Avers scored her first goal of the season off a Florencia Baldassini corner kick in the 24th minute.

But the lead didn't last long. JU (4-10-1, 2-4-1) scored back-to-back goals in less than a minute as Rachel Henry tied it up in the 33rd minute, and Jessica Shaffelburg scored 55 seconds later for a 2-1 Dolphins lead.

Jacksonville added a third goal in the 50th minute when Joelle d'Entremont scored on a scramble in front of the net for a 3-1 lead.

Sarah Collins pulled the Hatters within 3-2 when she scored her 11th goal of the season in the 71st minute thanks to a Kendall Harmon assist, but Stetson never found the equalizer.

The Hatters out-shot JU, 21-13, but Jacksonville goalkeeper Sara Wicks stopped nine shots. Stetson keeper Kahri Smith made six saves in her first start in over a month.
