Hatters Season Ends in Heart-Breaking Fashion at ASUN Tournament

FORT MYERS, Fla.—Niamh Rawlins scored off a corner kick with less than a minute to play in the second overtime as Lipscomb handed Stetson a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, Friday at FGCU Soccer Complex.

The Hatters end the season with a 9-7-2 record. Lipscomb (12-4-2) advances to Sunday's championship game and will face either Kennesaw State or FGCU.

Rawlins scored her first goal of the season when she took advantage of a corner kick by Leah Cernicky, punching the ball just inside the near post during a scrum to send the Bisons to victory with 56 seconds to go before the game would have entered the penalty kick phase.

The Hatters and Bisons battled evenly for 71 minutes before Stetson's Riana Metzger broke the scoreless tie. Metzger worked a give-and-go with Hailey Williams from inside 20 yards and rolled a shot past Bisons keeper Anna Buhigas for a 1-0 advantage.

The Hatters stayed aggressive even after taking a lead, as they kept the pressure on Buhigas and the Bisons. But Lipscomb took advantage of the one opening they needed to send the match to overtime.

Lipscomb dealt the Hatters the first of two late-game gut-punches when Ellen Lundy scored the tying goal off a perfect pass into the box by Emily Rogers in the 86th minute.

Lipscomb owned a slight 18-15 edge in shots, but had 11 on-goal to just six for the Hatters. Buhigas made five saves while Stetson's Emily Plotz made nine saves, one shy of a career high.

Friday's game marked the final contest for seniors Eduarda Pavao and Alyssa Swett.
