Rebounding the Difference as Hatters Fall 74-60 at USF

Brittney Chambers leads with 18 points

Tampa, Fla. – Brittney Chambers scored 18 points and Brianti Saunders scored 14, but 23rd-ranked USF held on to defeat visiting Stetson 74-60 Friday night at the SunDome.

The Hatters (11-4) led for much of the first half and trailed by just two at halftime. However, the Bulls (11-1) outscored Stetson 25-15 in the third quarter thanks in large part to second chance points.

"I thought the first half was good, but the third quarter just killed us," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "We gave them too many offensive rebounds. We are not going to beat anybody giving up 22 offensive rebounds."

Stetson led 6-0 to start the game and 15-7 midway through the first quarter.  The lead changed hands nine times in the second quarter before USF took a 31-29 lead into the break.

"I thought our transition defense was really good," Bria said about the first half.  "We were running good offense and we were rebounding the ball.  We only gave them two offensive rebounds in the second quarter."

Stetson held USF below their season averages in scoring, field goal shooting, and 3-point shooting.  However, the Bulls pulled down 55 rebounds, including 22 on the offensive glass, and scored 42 points in the paint.

"They knocked down shots after they rebounded, and it just really hurt us," Bria said.

The Hatters, meanwhile, collected 32 rebounds, including 12 from Sarah Sagerer.

Stetson will host Florida Gulf Coast on Jan. 7 to open ASUN Conference play. Tip-off at the Edmunds Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the first game of a Stetson basketball doubleheader.

Notes:
Brianti Saunders scored her 1700th career point.  She has scored in double figures in all 15 games … The Hatters went 15-for-17 from the free throw line to improve their season percentage to .819.
