Bats Come Alive as Softball Sweeps on Saturday

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson softball team took out some of its recent frustrations at the plate on Saturday to sweep day two of the Hatter Classic at Patricia Wilson Field.

The Hatters (16-9) clobbered a season-high three home runs in a 5-4 win over Fairfield, then pounded out a season-high 13 hits in a 13-5 win over Wagner.

Brooke Hutto (10-2) picked up victories in both games to earn her league-leading ninth and 10th wins of the season.  She tossed a complete game against Fairfield, striking out five and walking one.  She then pitched 4.2 scoreless innings of relief against Wagner, striking out a season-high eight.

Overall, Hutto threw 203 pitches on the day.

Against Fairfield, Jessie TenBroeck and Brittany Hawn hit solo home runs for the Hatters, while Jessica Griffin hit a go-ahead, two-run shot to rightcenter field in the bottom of the fifth inning.  It was her third home run of the season, and the 19th of her career.

In game two, Stetson scored nine times in the top of the second inning to break the game open.  The Hatters had three hits with the bases loaded during the frame, including a single by Molly Shasteen and doubles by Brittany Hawn and Jordan Davis.

All nine starters collected hits on the day, with Hawn, TenBroeck, Griffin, and Shasteen leading the way with three hits apiece.  Hawn added three runs and four RBI, while Griffin drove in three runs.  Kayla Drury scored three runs and stole three bases.

Stetson will host Sacred Heart in a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
