Hatters Blanked 5-0 in Series Finale at UNF

Box Score

Jacksonville, Fla. – Despite again getting good pitching against North Florida on Sunday, the Stetson Hatters continued to struggle offensively, dropping the series finale to the Ospreys 5-0.

The loss dropped the Hatters to 17-18 overall on the year and 1-5 in Atlantic Sun Conference play. UNF improved 24-14 overall and 5-4 in league play. The win for the Ospreys was their ninth straight at home and seventh straight over Stetson.

UNF once again jumped out to an early lead, scoring a pair of runs in the fourth inning despite getting just one hit. After Stetson freshman Logan Gilbert (2-1) retired the first two in the inning, he lost command of the strike zone and loaded the bases with three consecutive walks. UNF freshman Chris Berry, who had a two-run triple to score the first runs for the Ospreys on Saturday, delivered a single to center to score two.

Gilbert worked five innings in his outing, allowing just the two runs on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

The Ospreys extended their lead in the sixth inning thanks in large part to the Hatters being unable to turn a double play. Keith Skinner opened the inning with a single off the Hatters' Adam Schaly. After a sacrifice bunt attempt failed, Schaly got a ground ball to second for what should have been an easy double play. The Hatters were unable to turn it, getting just one out and giving UNF extra life.

After Berry was grazed by a pitch, Kyle Brooks ripped a double into left-center to score two runs for a 4-0 Ospreys lead.

UNF added an unearned run in the eighth inning off Hatters closer Walker Sheller when freshman Dalton Board hit a ground ball to third with the bases loaded and Jack Machonis, who had moved over from second for the inning, was unable to come up with it.

The Hatters never really threatened offensively against UNF freshman left-hander Austin Drury (3-1). Despite getting hits in six of the eight innings Drury was on the mound, the Hatters hit into a pair of double plays and left seven runners on base. Drury scattered seven hits, did not walk anyone and had four strikeouts.

Austin Hale led Stetson with two hits in the game.

The Hatters will conclude their road trip with a two-game series this week at No. 4 Florida State. The games are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday night and 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
