Hatters Hitting Their Stride on Day Seven of Football Camp

The Stetson University football team has officially completed one week of practice as the Hatters finished off day seven of preseason camp on Monday afternoon.

The 2016 edition of Stetson football is conditioning well and getting into better shape with each practice. The Hatters now have under three weeks remaining before it goes headlong into the start of the regular season on September 3.

The hard work the Hatters have been putting in is something head coach Roger Hughes sees as a major plus with this year's group. The humidity and heat of DeLand in August has called for shorter practices, but the dedication and commitment from Stetson has been outstanding.

“I'm really please with the work ethic. I like how guys are responding. Obviously with the heat we shorten practice and make everything more intense when we practice,” said Hughes. “But overall, I'm pleased with the young guys. I'm pleased with how we are working, now we just got to get it right.”

While certain positions have been solidified, other have not. The Hatters will be holding a scrimmage this Saturday to see how players look in game situations. It is the first of two scrimmages this preseason, and this will play a major factor in who can earn a starting role on the team.

“This Saturday is going to be a major test at the scrimmage, so that's going to give us a better evaluation, and we'll start making those decisions as far as who is going to be on our first and second team,” Hughes added.

The 2016 Stetson football team will open with three consecutive home games in September at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium. Online ticket sales for new season tickets and mini plans are available as are single-game tickets.
