The Stetson University football team stepped it up a notch on Tuesday morning, as Day 15 of preseason camp was arguably the most difficult one yet.
Scrimmaging with full pads on in the midst of another hot August morning in DeLand, the team members underwent a gut check of character and determination with the season opening contest now just eleven days away. The Hatters performed their usual practice drills, which included individual position practice before the offense and defense united for play calls and game specific plays.
Practice was long and tiring, and fifth year head coach Roger Hughes reminded the team after practice, the game is won in the fourth quarter, and late in games is when you need to put in that last bit of effort and finish strong.
Hughes told the players that though this morning's effort was not a failure there is still plenty of room for improvement.
“I think it's easy to start thinking about how you hurt and how tired you are, but there are over 100 guys on this team who are depending on each other,” said Hughes. “You have to find a way to draw a line in the sand and pull yourself over that line.
“I think the biggest battle we have is ourselves right now. This was a hard practice, and it was hard by design. Tomorrow is going to be another hard practice as we get ready for the game next week.”
Day 16 of preseason camp will commence on Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m.
The 2016 Stetson football team will open with three consecutive home games in September at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium.
